E-Waiting RoomBoard-certified bariatric surgeon at CentraState Medical Center, Ragui Sadek, M.D., recently performed the first robotic bariatric revision surgery in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
Using the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, Dr. Sadek performed a revisional procedure for a prior bariatric gastric bypass patient. Bariatric surgery is considered successful if 50 percent of excess weight is lost and maintained for at least five years, and obesity-related conditions are greatly improved. However, failure to obtain these results can mean surgical revision is necessary. Dr. Sadek’s patient required revisional surgery to correct the failure of the prior gastric bypass procedure and achieve further weight loss.
Robotic-assisted surgery is an alternative to traditional, open surgery for procedures considered too complex or delicate to treat using standard, minimally invasive technology. It offers physicians the control, range of motion, and visibility of open surgery, but it also simultaneously allows them to get precise results within a very small space at different and sometimes difficult angles.
The use of robotics provided Dr. Sadek with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control and enabled a minimally invasive approach to a complex surgical procedure. Other procedures where robotics is used includes prostatectomy, hysterectomy and colorectal surgeries. It also means that patients could potentially experience reduced blood loss; less pain and scarring; decreased risk of infection; fewer complications; and faster recovery time.
CentraState Medical Center’s Bariatric Weight-Loss Program consists of bariatric specialists who are trained and experienced in the leading surgical options, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. CentraState is designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) for demonstrating a commitment to quality and safety, and a track record of favorable outcomes.
