E-Waiting RoomAcid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), is when stomach acid rushes back into the esophagus. The lower esophageal sphincter, a valve-like muscle, typically opens to let food into the stomach and shuts to keep acid from returning to the esophagus. If this muscle weakens or relaxes abnormally, acid can rise, causing symptoms such as regurgitation, chest pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing.
When acid reflux becomes chronic, it is referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Specific foods, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medical problems can all cause acid reflux. While medications, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle adjustments are frequently used to address the symptoms of GERD, more severe instances may need surgical interventions.
A weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the fundamental cause of GERD, is treated using a medical device called the LINX Reflux Management System. The device is a thin, flexible band that is surgically inserted around the LES. It is made up of interconnected titanium beads with magnetic cores. By strengthening the LES’s resistance to abnormal opening, these magnets stop stomach acid from flowing backward into the esophagus. This minimally invasive surgery offers an alternative for GERD sufferers who might not react well to conventional therapies or drugs.
