Vegetables, Dieting

Most diets start out the same — you vow to limit your calories, prepare your meals in advance, and exercise regularly. Nothing is going to get in your way this time. You mean business.

Then, as the weeks go on, you feel the familiar pull toward the comfort of old habits. Before you know it, you’re back to eating fast food on your lunch break. You finally muster up the courage to step onto the scale, and boom — all the weight you lost has returned. You’re right back where you started.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone! Many people struggle to lose weight and keep it off. This repeated loss and regain of body weight is commonly known as the yo-yo effect, or weight cycling. Yo-yo dieting is often a result of treating weight loss as a temporary goal, as opposed to making long-term lifestyle changes. There are, however, solutions to help you achieve your weight loss goals — for good.

The Gastric Sleeve: A Long-Term Solution for Weight Loss

If you have a hard time maintaining a healthy weight due to struggles with diet, exercise, or medication, then weight loss surgery might be the right option for you! Bariatric procedures such as a sleeve gastrectomy, also known as a gastric sleeve, have made it possible to achieve long-term weight loss in a safe, healthy way.

What is a gastric sleeve?

A gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, is a permanent weight loss procedure that involves removing a portion of the stomach to make it smaller. Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed, which leaves a tube-shaped “sleeve” about the size of a banana. The goal of a sleeve gastrectomy is simple — with a smaller stomach, you eat less and feel more full than before.

What are the benefits of a gastric sleeve?

The gastric sleeve procedure is the fastest-growing weight loss surgery performed by bariatric surgeons worldwide. On average, gastric sleeve patients lose up to 75% of extra weight over a period of two years. Sleeve gastrectomy also involves the removal of the gastric fundus, an area of the stomach that produces ghrelin, the “hunger hormone.” With a limited production of ghrelin, the body experiences changes in hormone levels that lead to a decreased appetite and fewer “hunger pains.”

Another significant benefit of the gastric sleeve is a reduced risk of developing a weight-related illness such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. Reduction or reversal of these life-threatening diseases can improve patient health, increase your quality of life, and lengthen the lifespan.

How is the gastric sleeve procedure performed?

A sleeve gastrectomy is performed with the aid of a laparoscope, a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and camera lens that sends digital video to a monitor. After administering anesthesia, your surgeon will make several small incisions in the abdomen. The laparoscope is then inserted and used to navigate the inside of the abdomen. The surgeon will use various tools to remove part of the stomach and create the “sleeve.” The full surgery takes about an hour and patients recover in the hospital for 2-3 days following the procedure. Most gastric sleeve patients take about 4 weeks to return to a regular dietary schedule of solid foods.

Sleeve Gastrectomy vs. Gastric Bypass

Gastric sleeve surgery originated as the first step in two-stage gastric bypass surgery, a more invasive weight loss procedure recommended for severely obese patients who have substantial difficulty losing weight. The sleeve gastrectomy was so successful at preparing patients for a full gastric bypass, it quickly gained popularity as a standalone operation. Gastric sleeve surgery is less complex, takes less time to perform, and has fewer nutritional implications than a gastric bypass.
