Exercise for a Healthy Life

Home » Uncategorized » Exercise for a Healthy Life

At Advanced Surgical and Bariatrics, we help our bariatric patients achieve two main goals:

  1. Become a healthier you and
  2. Prevent future diseases

To accomplish both goals, bariatric surgery and a healthy diet aren’t enough. You will also need to exercise! Being physically active allows the body to reduce your risk of certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Physical activity also

  • Improves your quality of sleep
  • Boosts your mood
  • Increases confidence
  • Promotes mental alertness
  • Burns calories and fat
  • Relieves stress
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Builds muscle
  • Improves self-esteem and mood

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Prevention recommends that adults should exercise at moderate-intensity for two hours per week or at high-intensity for an hour and fifteen minutes per week. A combination of moderate- and high-intensity exercise will also satisfy your physical-activity needs.

When creating an exercise regimen, set realistic goals and begin exercising slowly. If you set an unattainable goal, determine why you couldn’t reach your original goal and adjust the following week’s goal.

If your joints hurt, even ten minutes of light exercise will benefit your health. Don’t give up! Any little effort can make a big difference. Strength is built up over time. So, incorporate an exercise regimen into your daily routine. If you fall back into old habits and skip exercising, that’s okay. Recognize what you’re skipping out on and remember the goal: to lead a healthy, happy life.

Gradually increase the intensity of your physical activity to reflect your needs and the progression of your healthy lifestyle. Benefits of exercise generally increase as the amount of time spent working out increases.

Working with our team at Advanced Surgical and Bariatrics, you can determine what exercise regimen is best for you! Following your hospital stay after bariatric surgery, you will be advised to walk to increase your circulation and, ultimately, happiness. When you return home, you may feel tired, but it’s recommended that you walk around your home to kick-start your healing process. Five weeks after your surgery, you and your doctor will discuss slowly increasing the intensity of your exercise to include walking on the treadmill and housework. After six weeks, you should be on your way to achieving the recommended amount of exercise as described by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Our experienced team at Advanced Surgical and Bariatrics is trained to give you the best quality of care and help you determine the right diet, exercise regimen, and procedure. We offer bariatric procedures including sleeve gastrectomy, LAP-BAND, gastric bypass, and the Obalon Balloon System.
