Gastric LAP BAND Surgery in New Jersey

Gastric Banding Surgery Recovery

The LAP BAND procedure is minimally invasive and requires only a few small incisions. This minimally invasive surgery does not alter your anatomy, so recovery time is shorter than for most other weight loss procedures that do permanently alter the anatomy of your stomach and intestines.

What can you expect after surgery?

You can expect to have some pain and discomfort that can be well controlled with pain medications. Initially the goal is to keep you hydrated with small sips of water and sucking on ice. Within a few days you will be on a clear liquid diet. It is important for you to walk around to regain your strength and prevent potential complications. Within a few weeks, you will move to pureed and soft foods.

You will be fatigued which is a normal response to surgery. Your surgeon at Advanced Surgical and Bariatric Surgery of New Jersey will provide you with instructions on specific steps you can take to recover well and quickly, and specific diet and exercise plan that will help you achieve your goals.

Recovery time varies with each person. Most patients can go home the day of the procedure and return to work within a week after surgery.

You will receive complete instructions from your Advanced Surgical and Bariatric Surgery of New Jersey surgeon. Resumption of normal activities will be determined between you and your surgeon.

5.0 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ very thorough and helpful

In prepping for any type of procedure, it definitely helps to have compassionate, friendly providers/staff to turn to. So far my experience with ASB has been wonderful. Dr Donaire is friendly and very thorough. I felt very comfortable discussing my personal health issues with him and look forward to moving forward with him as my provider. Alexandra B. has been fantastic. She is incredibly responsive and has been very thorough and helpful as well ensuring that I have all the information I need. I'm so thankful for my experience here so far and I'm looking forward to the future!

How much weight loss can I expect?

Initially, you can expect a loss of several pounds per week, which will slow to a pound per week. The LAP BAND procedure has been proven to help patients lose on average 65% of their excess weight within one year of surgery and keep off 60% of their excess body weight after 5 years, including losing 6 inches of their waist and hips.

You will experience improved health, including reduced or resolved diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. You will feel better and life will be easier.

LAP BAND surgery provides the opportunity to gradually lose weight and achieve long term weight loss without major surgery. Learning new behaviors, and adopting a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise routine while losing weight will give you renewed confidence and self-esteem.

You have taken the first step toward a more fulfilling and healthier life, but it is vital that you follow your surgeon’s instructions. Because the band is adjustable, you will need follow-up care so that the band can be adjusted periodically to help you reach your goals.

Congratulations on your determination and motivation to take the first steps to transform your life. The LAP BAND is a tool to help you feel full faster, and stay full longer, to help reduce your hunger. But it is only a tool. The hard work ahead is learning to make smart food choices, break bad habits, and learn new behaviors to improve your results and your health.
