How Is a Hiatal Hernia Diagnosed?

A hiatal hernia can be diagnosed with a specialized X-ray (using a barium swallow) that allows a doctor to see the esophagus or with an endoscopy. Other ways to diagnose a hiatal hernia are by CT scan or esophagoscopy (EGD). The esophagoscopy is a procedure where an endoscope, a long-thin flexible medical video camera, is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus and stomach and allows the examination of the upper digestive system.
