Bariatric Safety at Advanced Surgical & Bariatrics: Only the Best
Obesity is everywhere; in 2015, there were 600 million adults suffering from obesity. In addition to an overall reduced quality of life, obesity and overweight can cause conditions like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, COPD, and high blood pressure. It continues to maintain its status as the 2nd leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
The good news is that bariatric surgery can be the solution for obesity for many patients. These procedures provide a world of benefits for people who have obesity; from losing weight to an improved quality of life, surgery can even “reset” their metabolisms.
We know that people worry when they hear “surgery” – many believe that going under the knife is dangerous and that it’s safer to live with their weight-related conditions. However, they couldn’t be more wrong. Bariatric surgery has been proven to be safe time and again, and to help patients live longer, healthier lives.
There’s even more good news – Advanced Surgical & Bariatrics has proven to be one of the safest practices in New Jersey!
Safety of Bariatric Procedures – National Average vs. Advanced Surgical & Bariatrics
At Advanced Surgical & Bariatrics, patient safety is our #1 priority. Our surgeons research and study new practices to make sure they are up to date on the best techniques and procedures. Every advancement we make lets us provide better patient care and ensure our practice is safe and efficient.
As part of our commitment to our patients, we regularly compare our statistics against the national average. We are proud to report we are far below the expected rates of most bariatric centers! These rates are calculated based on patients with average risks for complications. The accepted expectation is that practices that serve mostly high-risk patients will have complication rates higher than the average. At Advanced Surgical & Bariatrics, we serve a majority of high-risk patients, but they are proven to be in the safest hands.
Although the number of Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses performed has gone down, our requirements for safety haven’t. We have seen 0 mortalities or leaks. Our complication rate for patients who chose this procedure is 0.2% – far below the national average of 1-2%!
One of the most popular surgeries is the vertical sleeve gastrectomy – it accounted for 58.1% of all bariatric procedures in 2016. Our practice is no different. We recognize the benefits of the gastrectomy and only utilize the best techniques when performing them. Our passion for helping our patients drives us to be safer with every surgery. Even though a few patients had to come back for a second operation, they weren’t related to our performances.
The Advanced Surgical & Bariatrics Safety Difference
We care about our patients, and their success is our success. We love seeing how happy and healthy they feel after their surgeries and are so proud to be a part of their journey. It is this passion for our patients that drives us to innovate our practices, study new techniques, and strive for excellence in all that we do.
This is why we were one of the first practices to employ the Enhanced Recovery After Bariatric Surgery (ERABS) Protocol, which helps patients before, during, and after surgery. By reducing physical stress and recovery time, patients are able to get back on their feet sooner!
