Find Your Own Healthy Routine

Eric L. Adams, Brooklyn’s borough president, visited his doctor in early 2016 where he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. His A1C level—the average blood glucose level for the last three months—was three times the normal level at 17%.

Adams decided to approach his diabetes untraditionally, without medication. He adopted a vegan diet and attempted to bring himself into remission through weight loss.

He succeeded!

According to the New York Times, “By adopting a vegan diet, preparing his own meals and working exercise into his everyday routines, he’s shed 30 pounds and completely reversed his diabetes… Within three months, his A1C level was down to a normal 5.7%.”

Adams hopes his success will inspire others. He works to inform his constituents in Brooklyn of the diet and lifestyle changes that can help counter diabetes.

However, even with bariatric surgery, you will need to build your own well-balanced diet. This doesn’t mean you will need to adopt a vegan diet, but you will need to make those “reasonable alterations!”

Make sure any diet you build is well-balanced. Dietitians are a great resource when building your well-balanced diet. At Advanced Surgical, we work with our patients on both their pre- and post-operative diet plans. We encourage and help patients find their well-balanced diet.

Remember, not all vegan foods are healthy! French fries cooked in vegetable-base oil are vegan, but not part of a well-balanced diet. Diets should always have protein, good fats, and lots of vitamins and minerals.
